Irene Schroeder
Vocals, clarinet, bass clarinet, guitar
Irene Schroeder received her Bachelor of Arts in Clarinet Performance from The University of Iowa in 1993.  Her clarinet style is influenced by jazz master Eddie Daniels and Eugene Delouche wihile her vocal style is influenced by Billie Holiday and Lucinda Williams.  She directs and manages The Mad River Duo and Band, and is the primary songwriter.  Irene also manages and composes for Grace and Beauty Ragtime Trio, performing with her pianist mother, Grace Schroeder, and percussionist Joe Rebik. Currently, Irene teaches private clarinet and bass clarinet lessons at West Music Conservatory in Coralville.  She has more than 26,000 miles of self-contained bicycle touring in her legs and was Iowa State CycloCross Champion in 1993 and 1995.  She teaches mountain bike and bicycle touring classes for The University of Iowa, and is an associate of the Artist Network program of Legion Arts, parent organization to CSPS in Cedar Rapids.
Joe Rebik received his Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Northern Iowa and his Master of Arts degree in Percussion Performance at Northwestern University while also studying and playing blues guitar with Delmark Blues Recording Artist Rockin' Johnny Burgin. Joe has played drums and percussion for numerous professional bands, orchestras and other ensembles across eastern Iowa and Pennsylvania. He currently performs with The Mad River Duo & Band  (lead guitar, vocals, drums) and with Grace & Beauty Ragtime (drums). He also played lead guitar and sang for blues band Sweet Jimmy, which won Iowa City's coveted Blues Challenge in 1996.  He currently leads JR's Blues Band and teaches guitar and percussion at the West Music Conservatory in Coralville.

Laurie Haag is currently playing bass in the Mad River Band, though she has also been known to fill the drummer's slot as well.  Laurie has performed with many different groups in the midwest.  She was the musical director for the feminist theatre troupe Graffiti Theatre, and currently can also occassionally be heard alongside Kelly Carrell, Deb Tiemens, BeJae Fleming, and Kristin Lems, with whom she performs on the Folkways Grammy-nominated CD Anthology "The Best of Broadside: Anthems from the American Underground."
